In a groundbreaking move, the Gujarat government has introduced strict guidelines to limit children’s use of mobile phones and social media. The initiative, announced by Education Minister Praful Pansheriya, aims to protect students’ mental and physical health from the negative effects of excessive screen time.

Under the new rules, students are banned from using mobile phones during school hours, and primary school children cannot bring personal devices to school. Teachers are also prohibited from using phones during class to ensure full focus on teaching.

The government is urging parents to monitor their children’s screen time and limit social media use at home. Parents are also encouraged not to use social media in front of their kids, as this can set an example for responsible tech usage.

The guidelines promote outdoor activities and sports as alternatives to screen time. Schools are being asked to prioritize physical activities to improve students’ overall well-being. The government plans awareness campaigns for parents, teachers, and students, using educational films to highlight the dangers of excessive smartphone use and irresponsible online behavior.

Minister Pansheriya expressed concern over the rise in mental health issues like anxiety and depression among children due to prolonged screen time. “We need to act now to ensure our children grow up healthy and focused,” he said.

This initiative places Gujarat among the leading states addressing the challenges of digital device overuse, encouraging a balanced approach to technology use in students’ lives.
