A recent report has highlighted a sharp decline in the fertility rate across France, especially in the town of Colomiers. Known for its affordable housing, the town previously attracted young couples looking to start families. However, since 2018, Colomiers has witnessed a significant 31% drop in birth rates.

A National Decline in Births

France, once known for its high fertility rate compared to its European neighbors, is now facing a steep decline. The country recorded the lowest number of births in 2024 since 1919. While still above the European average, the trend is worrying policymakers.

In response, President Emmanuel Macron introduced reforms to encourage childbirth, including financial aid for new parents. However, with frequent government changes, these policies have yet to take full effect.

Changing Mindsets on Parenthood

Midwives in Colomiers note that younger generations are delaying childbirth or opting out entirely. Economic concerns, career ambitions, and worries about the future—including climate change and political instability—are influencing their decisions. Many women now prioritize personal goals before considering parenthood.

Economic Burden of Raising Children

Raising a child in France is increasingly expensive. A decade-old government study estimated the cost at €6,800 per year, but inflation has pushed that figure to nearly €9,000. This financial strain discourages many couples from having more children.

Impact on Schools and Society

With fewer children being born, primary school enrollment has dropped by 10% in Colomiers over the past seven years. This trend is expected to affect secondary schools soon. Similar declines are visible in rural areas where fertility rates were traditionally higher.
