Cervical cancer, a common cancer among women, often raises concerns about fertility for those who dream of starting a family. Caused mainly by the human papillomavirus (HPV), this cancer affects the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. While treatments like surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can save lives, they may also harm a woman’s ability to have children.

Dr. Nisha Pansare, a fertility specialist, explains that early-stage cervical cancer often shows no symptoms, but later stages may cause abnormal bleeding or pelvic pain. Regular screenings like Pap smears and HPV tests are crucial for early detection. However, treatments like hysterectomy (removing the uterus) or radiation can make natural pregnancy impossible.

The good news is that fertility preservation options are available. Women can freeze their eggs or embryos before starting cancer treatment. Another method involves removing and freezing ovarian tissue, which can be re-implanted later. For those undergoing pelvic radiation, doctors can surgically move the ovaries out of harm’s way.

Dr. Pansare emphasizes the importance of early consultation with fertility specialists. Emotional support through counseling and support groups also plays a vital role in helping women navigate this challenging journey.

With advances in medical science, women battling cervical cancer can now focus on both recovery and their dreams of motherhood.
